1. What is ERP? The Evolution of ERP Systems

Definition of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)

ERP is a type of software used by organizations to manage day-to-day business activities such as accounting, procurement, project management, risk management, compliance, and supply chain operations. ERP systems integrate these various functions into one complete system to streamline processes and information across the entire organization.

Key Characteristics of ERP Systems:

  • Centralized data management

  • Integrated applications

Evolution of ERP Systems:

  • 1960s: Material Requirement Planning (MRP) systems focused on manufacturing.

  • 1970s-1980s: Expansion to Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II) with production scheduling.

  • 1990s: ERP systems emerged, integrating finance, HR, and other departments.

  • 2000s-Present: Cloud-based ERP solutions and intelligent systems like SAP S/4HANA provide real-time analytics and enhanced user experiences.
